ラフカディオ・ハーン（1850-1904）には、松江時代、心から信頼し慕った友がいた。
1890年8月30日、島根県尋常中学校の英語教師として松江に赴任したラフカディオ・ハーンを迎えたのは、28歳の若き教師西田千太郎（1862-1897）だった。
西田は、松江雑賀町の下級武士の家庭に生まれたが、子どものころからとりわけ優秀な成績を納め、生涯を通して学問と教育に身を捧げた人だった。しかし、家族を想うがゆえに松江に留まって教師となり、高等教育を目指し上京する友人や後輩の背中を見送りながらジレンマと苦悩の日々を送ってきた。さらに、若くして肺病を患い、病が西田を苦しめた。闘病の末、1897年3月15日、34歳の若さで惜しまれつつこの世を去った。2027年は西田千太郎の没後130年にあたる。
2人の出会いは、互いの人生を彩ることになる。西田は、公私ともに「ヘルン氏」（ハーン）を支え、リテラリーアシスタントとしてハーンの日本理解と創作を支え続けた。また、言葉が通じないハーンとセツに寄り添い、帰化手続きにも尽力、日本人「小泉八雲」が誕生したのも西田のおかげだった。ハーンもまた、西田から多大な影響を受けたことが作品から伺える。2人は文化と国を超え、互いの知識を高め合い真の友情を築いていった。ハーンは来日2作目となる『東の国から』を西田千太郎に捧げている。「西田千太郎へ―出雲時代のなつかしいおもいでに」という献辞とともに。
本展では、明治の世にわずか34年という短い生涯を駆け抜けた一人の教育者・西田千太郎の生き様を紐解いていく。生涯にわたって西田が残した日記[1]、ハーンとの往復書簡[2]など現存する貴重な資料から、2人の交流が互いに与えた影響や人と人との出会いの大切さ、尊さを感じ取っていただきたい。
西田千太郎の顕彰活動や旧居の保存活動が注目される今[3]、未来につながる活動への一助になることを願うものである。
［1］西田千太郎が遺した詳細な日記は、『西田千太郎日記』として1976年に出版され、西田自身のこと、ハーンとの交流はもちろん、当時の世相や教育事情などを知る上でも貴重な資料である。
［2］ハーンと交わした往復書簡は約150通を数え、さらに西田家に残された膨大な史料が現存する。
［3］2025年度後期NHK連続テレビ小説「ばけばけ」の錦織友一は西田千太郎がモデル。松江では有志による顕彰活動が大きな反響を呼んでいる。
During his time in Matsue, Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) formed a close friendship with a man he deeply trusted.
On 30 August 1890, when Hearn arrived in Matsue to take an English teaching position at the Shimane Prefectural Common Middle School, he was welcomed by a young teacher, the 28-year-old Nishida Sentaro (1862-1897).
Nishida was born to a family of lower-ranking samurai in Saika-machi, Matsue, but he excelled in academics as a child, and grew to devote his life to scholarship and education. However, out of devotion to his family, Nishida chose to remain in Matsue and became a teacher. As he watched his friends and juniors depart for Tokyo in pursuit of higher education, he struggled with conflicting feelings about the path he had chosen. He also suffered from tuberculosis, having contracted the disease at a young age. After a long battle with the disease, he passed away on the 15th of March 1897, at the young age of 34. The year 2027 will mark the 130th anniversary of Nishida Sentaro’s passing.
Their encounter would enrich both of their lives. Nishida supported Hearn in both his professional and personal life. As his literary assistant, Nishida played a pivotal role in aiding Hearn’s understanding of Japan and his literary endeavors. By helping Hearn and Setsu overcome the language barrier between them and assisting with Hearn’s naturalization procedures, Nishida also played an important role in the birth of the Japanese citizen “Koizumi Yakumo”. Hearn’s works also reveal the profound influence Nishida had on him. Transcending the boundaries of culture and nationality, the two enriched one another’s understanding of the world and forged a lasting friendship. Hearn dedicated the second work he published in Japan, Out of the East, to Nishida, with the inscription “To Nishida Sentaro, In Dear Remembrance of Izumo Days”.
This exhibit explores the life of Nishida Sentaro, an educator who lived a brief life of just 34 years during the Meiji era. Through valuable surviving materials, including the diaries Nishida kept throughout his life and his correspondence with Hearn, visitors can sense the mutual influence these two men had on one another and reflect on the enduring value of human connection.
At a time when efforts to honor Nishida Sentaro and preserve his former residence are attracting renewed attention, we hope this exhibition will serve as one small contribution to these efforts, helping to connect Nishida’s legacy to the future.
