Irish Writers of the Same Era as Hearn

Exhibition: In commemoration of the Ireland-Japan 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations & In commemoration of the 1st Anniversary of the Re-opening of the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum

Tuesday June 27, 2017–Sunday June 10, 2018
Exhibition Room 3

Ireland is a country of letters which has produced four winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) moved to Ireland at the age of two. He was fond of reading and folklore from a young age, and it was here that he found his way into literature. Writers who were contemporaries of Hearn include W.B. Yeats (1865-1939), Ireland’s national poet, Bram Stoker (1847-1912), known as the writer of Dracula, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), who is famous for Salome and the children’s story The Happy Prince, and James Joyce (1882-1941) the writer of Ulysses.

Through a long history of turmoil, which saw invasion, civil war and eventual independence, Ireland developed its own unique form of literature. This exhibition turns the spotlight onto Irish writers, including Hearn, who were active from the late 18th century to the 20th century. In addition to introducing the writers, it also explores the historical and cultural background of the times, and seeks to understand Hearn’s essential Irishness from a literary perspective.
